Cincaluk Omelet (Teluk Dadar Cincaluk)

May 3rd, 2011 | Announcements, Cookbook | 10 Comments

I am extremely thrilled to announce that my first cookbook “Easy Chinese Recipes” is about to hit the bookshelves of Asia Pacific starting June and will release in North America (US and Canada) on Sept 10, 2011! The cookbook will be available worldwide and on major online book stores.

It’s been a long journey from the moment I signed the book deal, two years ago precisely. It was a lot of hard work and dedication as I cooked, styled, photographed, and wrote the entire cookbook while I was pregnant. The good news is that the moment that we all have been waiting for is almost here!

The book is a compilation of 80+ popular Chinese recipes, including family favorites from dim sum & dumplings to rice & noodles. Every Recipe is graced with a color photo and many of them have step-by-step picture guide. Most importantly, all recipes are super easy, authentic, and deliver amazingly delicious results. Easy Chinese Recipes is a cookbook that you want to have in your kitchen—it’s filled with everyday recipes that you can refer to on a daily basis.

Here are some early praises for the cookbook:

â€What a gorgeous, heartfelt, fun, and inspiring book! From pot stickers, roast pork, steamed fish, original chow mein, and much more, Bee Yinn Low demystifies one of the world’s greatest cuisines through this amazing trove of utterly authentic yet accessible recipes. If you love Chinese Food, you must—and I mean must—own this book.” — Harris Salat, food writer and coauthor of The Japanese Grill

“Easy Chinese Recipes is a clear guide to help you cook Chinese for your family and friends. Bee Yinn Low is a multi-talented writer and cook, and her easy to follow recipes along with her own beautiful photography makes this a book you will reach for over and over again.” — Robert Danhi, author & photographer of Southeast Asian Flavors

“This book gushes with Bee Yinn Low’s enthusiasm for pursuing and preparing tasty Chinese food.â — Andrea Nguyen, author of Into the Vietnamese Kitchen and Asian Dumplings

“I’m extremely thrilled that you’re holding this cookbook, because that means you’ll be discovering the secrets to authentic Chinese home cooking.” — Jaden Hair, TV chef, food blogger,  and author of The Steamy Kitchen Cookbook

Below is the release schedule of “Easy Chinese Recipes” so please mark it on your calendar or you can simply pre-order the book now. I will continue to update this page to keep you posted on the FINAL release date in each country and the book shops that carry the book. DIY Beauty Dish Front View

A DIY beauty dish flash modifier. The basic plan came from here: www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-Beauty-Dish-flash-…

Everything I used was found around the house – an old chinese food container, duct tape, cardboard, foil, and packing tape. When I finished, the light was still kind of harsh, so I added a paper towel to diffuse it.

Snoopy’s Dish

The Parks are what used to be known as Camp Snoopy–a theme park entirely inside the Mall of America. I believe Nickelodeon has negotiated a deal with the MOA to re-theme this area. It will feature characters such as Sponge-Bob. You can even see Snoopy’s dish which was a popular meeting spot.

Opening in 1992, the Mall of America is the largest shopping mall in the United States (and perhaps the world, when all things are considered). It has a gross area of 4.2 million square feet which contains 500+ shops, restaurants, clubs, an underground aquarium, cinema, flight simulators, LEGO Imagination Center, and theme park. It even boasts 20,000 parking spaces and a dedicated light rail station. In a recent survey, Mall of America was the 2nd most visited tourist destination in the United States, bringing in around 40 million visitors per year.

Day 109: One of the best things about visiting Hawaii is eating local food. After a few hours of sunbathing at the beach, we had lunch at Rainbow Drive-In, admired by locals and tourists alike. Pictured above is a mix plate and chili rice. I’m not sure if it was the food or sun, but we came back to the room around 2:30pm and I fell asleep until 11:00pm.

NYC – Queens – Flushing: Flushing Mall Food Court – Xi’an Famous Foods – Stewed Pork Burger

Xi’an Famous Foods serves food from the city of Xi’an, an ancient city in the western region of China, which as the starting point of the Silk Road, boasts a unique cuisine that can best be described as a fusion of Middle Eastern and Chinese foods. Their most popular dishes include the Liang Pi "Cold Skin" Noodles, Savory Cumin Lamb Burger, Stewed Pork Burger, Lamb Pao Mo Soup, and various types of Hand-Pulled noodles. Their location at the Flushing Mall Food Court is their second, with the original a few blocks away at the Golden Mall on Main Street.

Xi’an Famous Foods’ Pork Burger was selected #38 on The 101 Best Sandwiches in New York by Grub Street and New York Magazine.

You’d think stations would have been pouring in from around the world. Alas, of all these contraptions, only one dish kinda-sorta worked (and that included the antennae).

Food = Drugs

Parthenios Luncheonette

Rockford, IL

It seems that when the Parthenios took over this former drugstore they didn’t repaint the sign, just added new neon. So, "Drugs" is now "Food" or "Parthenios." It’s ugly but cool that it is a kind of neon Palimpsest. I guess a vintage sign (like ancient parchment) is sometimes cheaper to reuse than make new.

At least "soda" still makes sense.

La Carreta Cuban food #616

I love plantains, but hate yucca*. I eat rice—sticky japonica, not long-grained indica—almost every night.

* At least, the way that it’s prepared at La Carreta. Note that the food is generally abysmal there.

Answers.com tells me that yucca is the English spelling for American Spanish yuca (from Taino, for the linguists in the audience). It also hints that it’s the same as cassava and manioc, two other edible roots that I’ve read about.

Lilian and David’s Club Sandwich – Just Fine Food AUD16.50

Lilian and David were smart. They ordered a club sandwich to share, so that they could have a vanilla slice as well!

We had lunch at Just Fine Food, just to try the vanilla slice, which was pretty good, but the vanilla flavour wasn’t as strong as I’d liked and the custard seemed to be too starchy, and less eggy and creamy. Still pretty good though. While we were there, about an hour, we saw 2 and a half trays sold. Each tray had 48 slices! Amazing.

Food crisis to cause malnutrition: UN
food

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Tuesday that he was launching a task force to ensure a solid, coordinated international response to the food crisis. The task force will work to draft a strategy on both short- and long-term responses to food supply strains, which economists have linked to factors including high fuel and fertiliser costs, the use of crops for biofuels, and commodity market speculation.

Baked Ricotta and Potato Cake with Smoked Salmon – Relish Food Store AUD12.50
food

Julia saw that the other diners all seemed to be having smoked salmon in something or the other, so she went for this.

The generous folds of smoked salmon was smoky and rich, and really luscious!

Compared to that, the baked potato and ricotta cake didn’t stand a chance, although it did stand quietly in the back preventing the salmon from overpowering your palate. The egg yolks were a bright orange, but it was a pity that the yolks were not runny, the way we liked it.

A champion of consistently high-quality food that keeps everyone from fussy five-year-olds and food-trendy mums to keep-it-plain-and-simple grandmas happy. Love the salmon, dill and potato cakes, egg and bacon pie and baked lemon cheesecake.
