I think the breakfast from Kilimanjaro Coffee on Nicolson Street in Edinburgh is my favourite around here. Perhaps the only thing it’s missing is a hash brown as well as the potato scone, but you can hardly complain about not having enough food. Some might remark on the absence of black pudding, but I think haggis is a better alternative. Marmalade for the thick cut toast is a very nice touch as well.
This was £9.45 in total, but well worth it for the quality ingredients, I think.
煎年糕 Pan Fried Nian Gao

煎年糕 Pan Fried Nian Gao coated with egg.
Nian Gao is literally Year Cake, made with glutinous rice flour and sugar, boiled or steamed until the sugar caramelises into this rich brown!
A typical Chinese New Year food!

On Tuesday night I cooked a meal for 7 people. I haven’t cooked this much food since leaving my (large) family to come to Australia. Usually I cook for 1-2, at the most 3 people.
The Asian curry pastes and sauces take a while to prepare before cooking. The other parts of this dish, though as simple as hardboiling eggs, slicing raw cucumber or deep-frying dried ikan bilis (‘small fish’) need to be prepared in advance to avoid rushing.
I started preparing EVERYTHING at 5pm, and began cooking at 6.30pm, for a 7.30pm start! Whew… what a rush! Thank goodness my husband came home to help me!
The verdict: it was a hit with the gang! I enjoyed it too, because I haven’t had traditional Malaysian food for a while now, living in a mainly Caucasian country town.
I will improve my chicken curry though. It had absolutely no hint of fiery-ness = not enough chilli. More like chicken stew with Asian spices!!
— photo taken by hubby, my hands were very oily at that stage… and i was ravenous!
I prefer savoury breakfast to sweet ones.
Sorry for using an old photo, but I don’t think I have any chance of having it here again for a while in Bunbury! =)
Burger/ዂ/Brød & Vin/(Hot) Burger

Place: Brød & Vin ( English: Bread & Wine)
Burger: (Hot) Burger
Points: 4.5 of 6
Reviewer: Me
Nano review: I would not call it hot but absolutely spicy. Well, there was two slices of tough chili pepper one suddenly bites into, a bit unbalanced perhaps but I happened to like. The burger itself was a pleasant surprise! The cheese did not taste anything, but hey, then it did not do any harm either!
Others: This is a funny place… It is a Chinese place, guess you would not have guessed that from name and picture! It once was an Italian restaurant that gave up and some Chinese took over not changing name or interior! Cheap Chinese food in University area makes this a very popular place! But I find the Chinese food not very good (sorry anyone who find it good, I am being diplomatic even…). Still I am a well known customer here even prior to the arrival of this burger, why? Cheapest beer in town: 40 nok for 0.5l for not ‘just another lager’ but the local great pilsner Hansa! I do not care if they food poisoned a complete faculty, just keep that deal going here virtually on My Street! And now they got an alright burger! In Bergen on budget? Go here for burger and beer. Or just beer. And tell me, and I will drop by! Besides me Helge Jordal is a regular.
Serving time: Holy Burger! Had only one sip of that beer! Fantastic!

Binary, would I consider having it again?: It will happen.

I read a French food blog – www.chocolateandzucchini.com – which is a great mix of social observation, food history and recipes. And in English too! In a recent post the author talked about a food article she was commissioned to write for Régal Magazine. She mentioned how she styled her food for the photos. Reading her entry reminded me of the unusual shallots (see other photos from Taj food store, Brighton) I recently bought in their self-tie bundle. Here they are just before I used them in a salad. This is exactly how the shallots were sold. No plastic wrap, no plastic container – no nothing – just the shallots self-tied. Exactly as it should be!

Served with a rosemary garlic hashbrown patty. There are few things I enjoy more than a fried egg sandwich. The yolk was perfectly runny and a nice combo with the biscuit. The hasbrown patty was really tasty too.
The focus here is on pre-prepared foods like savoury and sweet pies, quiches, baguettes and desserts, which helps keep the prices low. It also means that you aren’t bombarded by the smells and din of a kitchen in this tiny little bakery cafe.
The food, while simple, is very well done. We couldn’t resist getting a loaf of bread to take home, and the bread was excellent!
